Information for prospective students of Civil Engineering (B.Eng.)

The Bachelor degree course in Civil Engineering offers students a comprehensive insight into the fields of civil engineering. The focus of this degree course is the well-founded and practice-oriented engineering education with knowledge of fundamental skills such as planning, measuring, and constructing. Next to expert knowledge, the students strengthen their social, methodical expertise and personal competencies. The degree course of civil engineering optimally prepares the students for the extensive tasks in all fields of civil engineering.

During the undergraduate studies fundamental technical knowledge is conveyed in the following modules: building engineering, engineering mathematics, building materials/physics, building construction, building information science, basics of transportation and water management, surveying techniques and construction management.

During the main studies general specific knowledge and in-depth knowledge is being conveyed in at least five of the obligatory subjects of the following degree courses foci, in an engineering project, during the practical term and bachelor thesis at the end of the studies.

Course catalogue

Modularization during studies means a structure of the courses in which the courses such as lectures, exercises, practical experiences, excursions or seminars are combined to topical units, the so-called modules. The composition of a module is determined by the competency, which shall be achieved by completing the module.

The module handbook contains information about duration, credits, type of examinations, requirements, learning results, workload, type of learning, content, literature, module coordinators of the modules of a degree course. Further information can be found in the guideline on modularization and credit point awarding of the Bund-Länder commission. The module overview and the study content can be downloaded in form of a PDF.

Admission requirements

The exclusion deadline for submission of the admission application ends on January 15, for the summer semester and on July 15, for the winter semester.

You must apply separately and informal for the random selection. The application period starts two weeks prior to the begin of the lecture period of the respective semester and ends on the day of the begin of the lectures of the respective semester.

Access the academic calendar.

The degree course is admission restricted. The study spot placement takes place via a local NC procedures.

A pre-study internship of 12 weeks lengths is required if you would like to enroll into the bachelor's degree course. It is recommended completing this internship prior to the start of studies, in order to acquaintance oneself at an early stage with the field civil engineering.
The manual labor pre-study internship includes tasks on construction sites or other production sites of the construction industry and of the building trade (main building trade and ancillary building trade), i.e.: earthwork and foundation engineering, cement, steel and wooden constructions, road constructions, hydraulic engineering, building restorations, piping and civil engineering, and building extensions.
The proof of the completion of the manual labor pre-study internship is to be submitted at the latest when registering for the practical internship (usually during the 4th semester) to the examination board.
The original certificate of the company you completed the internship at is to be submitted, which includes the period of the internship and the completed practical tasks.
Please contact Mrs. Dipl. Ing. Cornelia Rauscher, should you have any further questions about the internship.

Prospects

Studying civil engineering allows to think in technical, economical, ecological and legal categories, as well as to act appropriately and responsibly in the work routine. Civil engineers therefore play a major role in maintaining and securing an adequate life quality. They are working in building and civil engineering companies, engineering and planning offices, technical administration offices of municipalities, federal states and of the Federal Republic of Germany, service companies of building, traffic infrastructure, water management, and organization with activities in the technical development aid.
After the graduation, one can immediately enter the job market or a master's degree course can be pursued, which will then allow applying for a PhD.

The job market situation for civil engineers is extremely good. There are roughly 4,500 new civil engineers required according to the building industry. In 2011-12 only approx. 2,200 graduates completed their studies at the institution of higher education. The building industry is looking for qualified and motivated staff!

Obligatory subjects

  • Civil Engineering: Planning and organization of the construction process, the construction process and the construction sites, completion of building contracts, calculation of building measurements, project management, building cost controlling, safety and health protection, computer applications in building operations
  • Constructive engineering: Design, construction and static measurements of concrete / steel concrete, wooden, steel and other building materials, as well as their formation (geotechnology) in building constructions and civil engineering
  • Traffic: Planning of infrastructural establishments, design, construction, operation and management of street and railway facilities in metropolitan areas
  • Water management: Planning, design, construction, operation and management of water treatment plants, water supply and waste water treatment plants as well as waste and wastewater treatment technology
