Interview with Philipp Chalupsky

Insights from a former scholarship holder

Philipp Chalupsky received two years of Deutschlandstipendium funding and, after graduating with a degree in Service Engineering in 2020, accepted a position at Robotec PTC in Bremen. In this interview, Ursula Klein talks to him about his current situation and his experiences during his time as a scholarship holder.

"The Deutschlandstipendium scholarship enabled me to work on an exciting project at J. Wagner GmbH and complete my bachelor's thesis at Linde Material Handling in Aschaffenburg. In both cases, the direct connection to the companies saved me a lot of application writing."

Mr. Chalupsky, what did the Deutschlandstipendium offer you personally?

First and foremost, it relieved my financial burden. This gave me time to focus even more on my studies and continue my duties as a group or organizational leader in my clubs. Furthermore, by getting to know my sponsors, I met some incredibly great companies and interesting people. I didn't want to believe it at first, but the relatively short networking experience gave me many new insights and ideas that I was able to incorporate either during my studies or now in my professional life.

Were you able to give something back to our university?

Yes, the university asked me at the time if I would like to help with a promotional campaign for the Deutschlandstipendium to acquire new sponsors. Of course, as a Deutschlandstipendium recipient, this was a given for me. The fact that this event took place in the VIP area of the Commerzbank Arena during Eintracht Frankfurt's Euro qualifiers was a fantastic experience. Besides the free VIP buffet, the highlights of the evening were, of course, the meetings with the SGE players and officials. I still have the ticket hanging at home as a little memento of this wonderful event.

How have you developed through the Deutschlandstipendium?

I've always been just who I am: authentic. However, during this time, I met several scholarship recipients who were rather shy at the beginning of their scholarship. Afterward, they opened up. They gained greater self-confidence through the Deutschlandstipendium. It was a pleasure to observe this development.

How did the Deutschlandstipendium help you with your studies?

Since I received funding from industrial companies twice, the Deutschlandstipendium enabled me to work on an exciting project at J. Wagner GmbH on Lake Constance and to complete my bachelor's thesis at Linde Material Handling in Aschaffenburg. In both cases, the direct connection to the companies saved me a lot of application letters. Everything actually happened on its own, and my "applications" were merely a formality in the end.

Have your sponsors also benefited from you?

I think every sponsor has their own interest in supporting us and sees corresponding advantages for themselves. What they all have in common, however, is that their sponsors have access to us, young and talented people who all bring special skills, a high level of commitment, and, above all, a sense of social engagement, which they can leverage. For example, I worked on projects related to Service 4.0 for the aforementioned companies, based on which new industrial services are now being developed or existing services are being adapted or expanded accordingly. My sponsor was very enthusiastic.

Thank you for the interview!
