Guided Tour “Frankfurt and National Socialism”

04.08.2025

Start of guided tour: 11:00 a.m.

Meeting point: tba following soon

Please register until August, 1st 2025 via this Registration form!

This city tour takes a double look at Frankfurt - as a National Socialist city and as a city that came to terms with its past after 1945. Frankfurt changed dramatically under the National Socialists: a Nazi mayor took office and the old mayor had to flee. Unwanted population groups were resettled. Streets, bridges and squares were renamed. After the Second World War, the National Socialists left Frankfurt a destroyed city - and poorer by thousands of Jewish and other residents.

In the 1960s, the Frankfurt Auschwitz trial brought the repressed Nazi past to the forefront of German historical consciousness for the first time. Why did the once liberal and “Jewish” Frankfurt turn to National Socialism so quickly? Which places still bear witness to the crimes of German fascism today and how did the city begin to come to terms with its Nazi past?

2-Day Trip to Weimar – Part of the “Traces of the Past” Program

A highlight of the “Traces of the Past” series organized by the ScoPE, AStA, the International Office and Faculty 2 is a two-day trip to Weimar – a city known for its rich German art, culture, and history. Weimar is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was home to famous writers like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. The Bauhaus, the world-famous school of art and design, was also founded in Weimar by the famous architect Walter Gropius. With its museums, castles, parks, and historic old town, Weimar offers a lot to explore.

But Weimar also has a darker side to its history: just a few kilometers from the city center lies the Buchenwald Memorial, the site of a former Nazi concentration camp. A visit there is a powerful reminder of the crimes of the Nazi era and the importance of remembering the past!
