    Good Gift-Giving

    Duration: June 2024 – February 2026. Project management until September 2025. Third-party funding: GLS Treuhand e.V. Conducted in collaboration with Dr. Carla Young.

    The third-party funded project “Good Gift-Giving: Creative Gifts for a Sustainable Society?” systematically examines the phenomenon of gift-giving in Germany and aims to explore and identify new, trend-setting developments. Gift-giving is understood as a fundamental form of social interaction, the social effects of which – positive, negative, intended, and unintended – are to be empirically investigated. The social prerequisites and inhibiting and promoting conditions for gift-giving geared toward socio-ecological transformation are also to be identified. As part of the project, existing studies and data will be evaluated and qualitative empirical case studies on gift-giving and foundations will be conducted.

    DFG Network Law in the Anthropocene

    Duration November 2024 - October 2027. Funded by the DFG.

    The DFG research network “Law in the Anthropocene” (RiA for short) is an association of 14 researchers from the fields of sociology, law, and anthropology. The network is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Doris Schweitzer (Goethe University Frankfurt) and Dr. Johan Horst (MPI for Legal History and Legal Theory, Frankfurt am Main). In our publications and events, we examine the entanglements of law and the Anthropocene with a view to the three basic categories of social science: subjectivity, materiality, and responsibility. This is because the law responds to the challenge of the Anthropocene by renegotiating who or what is considered a legal subject, what becomes the subject of concern as a material prerequisite of the law, and what should be considered responsible action in the future. Our joint work is based on a research program that enables an interdisciplinary perspective on common problems. At its core is an analytical approach with which we aim to examine the entanglements of law and the Anthropocene by distinguishing between three levels of analysis: the Anthropocene in law, law in the Anthropocene, and law for the Anthropocene.

    DEMETRA. Democratic Governance, Environmental and Climate Challenges, and Societal Transformation

    EU Horizon Europe project. Duration: May 2024 – October 2027. Management of the work package on living labs (until August 2025).

    The climate crisis requires fundamental transformation processes in all areas of life. At the same time, increasingly radical right-wing and populist movements make it clear that parts of society feel ignored by politicians and radically reject the upcoming transformations. In response to these multiple crises, it is important to actively involve as many citizens as possible in the transformation processes. The DEMETRA project, involving seven European countries, analyzes processes of citizen participation that aim to give all parts of society a political voice. What opportunities do these so-called deliberative participatory processes (DPPs) offer, and what challenges do they entail? The researchers are looking in particular at DPPs in the food system. The project will result in recommendations for action and tools designed to enable democratic governance of sustainability transformations at the EU, national, and local levels.

    The project “Participation: The civic, cooperative, and social entrepreneurial creation and design of public welfare-oriented provision” aims to analyze, through theoretical reflection and interdisciplinary empirical social research, how civil society operates and to what extent this can be described as promoting the common good and sustainable.

    In this joint project, the Chair of Sociology, in particular Dynamics and Regulation of Economy and Society at the University of Hamburg, collaborated with the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (project management) and the Seminar for Cooperative Studies at the University of Cologne.

    Futures of Sustainability

    DFG Research Training Group at the University of Hamburg, first phase (September 2019 – November 2023), led by Prof. Dr. Frank Adloff and Prof. Dr. Sighard Neckel.

    Sustainability has become a key concept in social change, proclaimed as a normative principle by states, international organizations, companies, and social movements worldwide. Regardless of questions surrounding the actual implementation of this model, sustainability has thus become an indispensable point of reference in discussions about global development models. However, the term is associated with very different goals and visions of the future. Modernization, transformation, and control outline different development paths of sustainability and spaces of possibility for social change. The investigation of these development paths, as well as the underlying imaginations, practices, and (infra)structures, was the focus of the first funding phase of the research group between 2019 and 2023.
