German as a foreign language

If you like to learn German we provide language learning material in the learning lounge on the ground floor.

Find dictionaries in library catalogue

The library catalogue provides detailed information about all the books and other items in the library.

  • Click on library catalogue and use the advanced search
  • Chose subject: Insert the German word wörterbuch (=dictionary) and the German word for your preferred language (e.g. englisch, französisch, polnisch)

For a monolingual dictionary with definitions in the same language you can also try out the simple search looking for the word dictionary in your preferred language.

You will be presented with a shortlist of records which match your search. Click on one of the titles to display the full record with further information. If it is a printed book the shelfmark tells you, where you find the book in the library. If you click on the link location, the exact location will be shown on a floor plan highlighted in red.

Please note: Printed dictionaries cannot be borrowed.

Find online dictionaries

You also find online dictionaries in the catalogue plus. The link full text leads you to these dictionaries. You may also try out our bilingual online dictionaries from Langenscheidt for English, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Russian. Before searching in the database “Langenscheidt” select the preferred language.

Find dictionaries directly on the shelves in the library

General language dictionaries not related to a specific topic (e.g. business) are to be found in the learning lounge on the ground floor. Look for the shelves with the shelfmark FRE.

If you look for a dictionary related to a subject area, e.g. an English dictionary for social work, please check catalogue plus.
