Student Notification Procedure of the Health Insurance (SMV)

In Germany, students must have health insurance cover throughout their studies. (§ 5 Para. 1 No. 9 SGB V). For this reason, prospective students must provide proof of their insurance status when enrolling (§ 199a Para. 2 SGB V).

Since 01/01/2022, the electronic procedure has replaced the previous paper procedure.

Data transfer between universities and health insurance companies in both directions will take place exclusively electronically.

Which of your data is transmitted electronically?

  • Notification M10 about your insurance status (subject or exempt from compulsory insurance, not subject to compulsory insurance)
  • Notification M11 about the change of health insurance company 
  • Notification M12 about the delay in payment of health insurance contributions. Please note: In this case, you may be compulsorily exmatriculated.
  • Notification M13 about the settlement of contributions in arrears
  • Notification M20 about the start of studies with date and semester of enrollment
  • Notification M30 about the end of studies with the end of the semester and the date of exmatriculation
