State to State programs

The state to state programs offer students from Hessen the opportunity to spend a semester abroad as part of partnerships with international regions such as Queensland (Australia), Wisconsin and Massachusetts (USA). The aim of these programs is to promote intercultural exchange and enable international study experiences - supported by scholarships (tuition is waiverd) and close cooperation with local partner universities.

General information on the state to state programs and application procedures

Please inform yourself about the different programs and look for the application documents:

The Language Center offers a variety of language courses for further preparation. A DAAD language certificate is sufficient for the application. However, some universities, especially in the USA, require a TOEFL or IELTS certificate. Find out whether this applies to your chosen university and what language level is required.

A good way to prepare for your semester abroad is to take part in the Buddy Program.

Please use the application documents of the respective programs and also register in our Mobility-Online database within the respective deadlines. To do this, register at:  Mobility Online.

Hesse-Wisconsin: November 15 (earliest start of studies in Wisconsin is the fall term (September to December) of the following year).

Hesse-Massachusetts: November 15 (earliest start date in Massachusetts is the fall term (September through December) of the following year).

Hesse-Queensland: June 1 (earliest start of studies in Queensland is semester 1 (end of February to end of June) of the following year).

Please submit your application documents to us in full and on time. We will check your application documents and invite you to an interview if necessary. Applicants are expected to have informed themselves about the situation in the host country. In particular, knowledge of the history of the target country and its economic, political and cultural situation is expected. There is also an opportunity to present the project orally and to add any comments that seem important. The interview will be conducted in English. This interview, for which only a limited amount of time is available, should be seen as a supplement to the written application documents.

Nominated applications are forwarded to the Hessian coordination offices with an assessment of personal and professional suitability. A final selection is then made by independent selection committees. You will be notified in writing once this selection has been completed.

Once the selection process has been completed, your application will be forwarded to the host university (nomination).

In the second step, you apply to the host university; the necessary documents will be sent to you after nomination. The host university will review your documents and decide whether to accept you onto the degree program. Final acceptance will only be granted after your application has been accepted by the host university.

As financial support for semesters abroad, you can apply for the PROMOS scholarship from the DAAD. You can also apply for the BAFöG  grant for study abroad. You can find information on other funding options on our funding programs page.
